[renal principal cell]
The term refers to a specialized epithelial cell type in the collecting ducts of the kidney. These cells are characterized by an abundance of water channels. Renal principal cells mediate salt and water absorption. The cells mediate Na+ absorption and contribute also to K+ secretion (Marunaka et al, 1997).
