abbr. RIF (a term with multiple meanings). This biochemically uncharacterized factor reduces the ability of the liver to function as an extrarenal source of erythropoietin (Naughton et al, 1981; Dornfest et al, 1985). It acts as an inhibitor of HEF [hepatic erythropoietic factor], a factor that increases the formation of erythropoietin in the regenerating liver that has been identified as ALR [augmenter of liver regeneration] and HSS [hepatic stimulator substance].
