this term has been used to refer to cell death of neurons observed in regions distant from, but functionally connected to, the primary site of a lesion after focal brain damage (Block et al, 2005). These remote effects may be neuroprotective and have been shown to be associated with inflammation (Viscomi et al, 2008) and inflammation-modulating drugs in particular (for overview see: Viscomi et al, 2009). Viscomi et al (2010) have reported that the endocannabinoid system is a key participant in the determination of cell fate in remote cell death and its associated mechanisms.
