[plant defensin]
This term has been given to a class of plant peptides with structural and functional properties resembling those of insect and mammalian defensins (Terras et al, 1995). Plant defensins were isolated first from wheat and barley grains (Collila et al, 1990; Mendez et al, 1990) and called gamma-thionins because their size (5 kDa) and the number of disulfide bridges (four) was the same as with alpha-thionins and beta-thionins. Subsequent work has shown that gamma-thionins are structurally unrelated to alpha-thionins and beta-thionins (Terras et al, 1992; Bruix et al, 1993; Bohlmann, 1994).
