Abbr. PCFC. These cells have been identified by Lepore et al (2005) in adult murine pituitary. They are identified and enriched through the active uptake of the fluorescent dipeptide, beta-Ala-Lys-N-epsilon-AMCA (7-amino-4-methylcoumarin-3-acetic acid). Pituitary colony-forming cells are mostly contained within the large, agranular subpopulation of AMCA(+) cells. The AMCA(+) population also contains rare cells that express growth hormone or prolactin. Lepore et al (2007) have reported that these cells have the capacity to divide and differentiate in vivo into cells expressing growth hormone.
