This specialised cell type is one of the non-sensory supporting cells in the organ of Corti in the sensory epithelium in the mammalian cochlea. Single rows of inner pillar cells and outer pillar cells separate the single row of inner hair cells from the first row of outer hair cells. The intercellular space between inner pillar cells and outer pillar cells form the tunnel of Corti, a unique fluid-filled structure that extends along the length of the cochlear spiral (Raphael and Altschuler 2003). Pillar cells are characterised by a cytoskeleton composed of thousands of parallel, cross-linked microtubules and actin filaments.
