phenylpyruvate tautomerase

abbr. PPT. This enzyme (phenylpyruvate keto-enol isomerase; EC5.3.2.1) converts keto-phenylpyruvate into enol-phenylpyruvate (Knox et al, 1957). The same activity is observed with MIF, an immunoregulatory protein first described as an inhibitor of the random migration of monocytes and macrophages (Rosengren et al, 1997) and with a factor described as TRANSMIF. The physiological significance of this activity is not yet clear. It has been shown, however, that enzymatically inactive macrophage migration inhibitory factor inhibits chemotaxis of monocytes and random migration (Hermanowski-Vosatka et al, 1999).
