[phalangeal cell]
These cells are found in the organ of Corti in the inner ear (the spiral organ), a complex structure containing a single row of inner hair cells and three rows of outer hair cells. One row of inner phalangeal cells and three rows of outer phalangeal cells (called also Deiters' cells, after the German pathologist Otto Deiters [1834-1863]) are the supporting cells of the hair cell area in the cochlea.
Phalangeal cells are epithelial cells in nature. They are a type of neuroglial cells that has been shown to produce neurotrophins and NGF, which support the survival of inner hair cells
