This cell type is found in the stria vascularis of the cochlear duct, a vascular-rich region with tight junctions that establish compositionally distinct fluid compartments. The cells show features of melanocytes and macrophages (Masuda et al, 1994; Zhang W et al, 2012). These cells are closely associated with microvessels and structurally intertwined with endothelial cells and pericytes. They express several markers of melanocytes (Zhang et al, 2012) and have been characterized as resident macrophages (Shi, 2010) that proliferate slowly and express several macrophage
