also: perivascular supporting cells (see also: vascular mural cells). This is a collective term for cell types surrounding blood vessels, i.e., the term loosely refers to anatomical location rather than to a distinct cell type. The term usually refers to mature and immature smooth muscle cells and, mostly, pericytes, but may include also macrophages, dendritic cells, or other specialized cell types.
