[perivascular cell]
also: perivascular supporting cells (see also: vascular mural cells). This is a collective term for cell types surrounding blood vessels, i.e., the term loosely refers to anatomical location rather than to a distinct cell type. The term usually refers to mature and immature smooth muscle cells and, mostly, pericytes, but may include also macrophages, dendritic cells, or other specialized cell types.
Williams et al (2001) have reviewed bone marrow derived perivascular cells in the central and peripheral nervous system that continuously turn over in the CNS and are found adjacent to CNS vessels. These cells
