Peptide 23 has been identified originally in rat pituitary cell conditioned medium as a secreted protein, the expression of which is regulated in a similar fashion to growth hormone. The secretion of this protein is stimulated by growth hormone releasing hormone and inhibited by somatostatin. The protein is expressed highly in pancreas and intestinal tissues and is the same as PAP-1 [pancreatitis-associated protein-1] (Katsumata et al, 1995).
Chakraborty et al (1995) have reported that peptide 23 is expressed by luminal epithelial cells in the rat uterus and that its expression is controlled by estrogen. The expression of the protein in the gastrointestinal tract is regulated by
