These cells are one of two predominant cell types in fish gills (see also: chloride cells). They cover the lamellar gas-exchange surface of fish gills and are assumed are assumed to be important for gas exchange. They may play an active role in ion uptake and acid-base transport by the gills in some teleosts (Evans et al, 2005; Wilson and Laurent, 2002). These cells correspond to those which, in Shrimp larvae, were designated mitochondria-poor cells (Youson and Freeman, 1976), mucous-platelet cells (Mallatt and Ridgway, 1984) and mucous pavement cells (Mallatt et al, 1995).
