[parallel fiber]
this term refers to the long axons of the type of neurons known as granule cells in the cerebellum that, unlike climbing fibers, synapse with distal dendrites of Purkinje cells. These axons ascend through the Purkinje cell layer to the molecular layer, bifurcate, and pass through the dendritic trees of the Purkinje neurons (see: Harvey and Napper, 1991). Parallel fiber axons are also the main excitatory input to the Golgi cells, stellate cells, and basket cells.
The majority of these axons is unmyelated but myelinated axons are also found in some areas and differ in processing speed (see, for example, Wyatt et al, 2005).
