also simply: pathfinder cells. This term refers to a cell type that can be isolated from the pancreas of adult organisms. The cells have been shown to stimulate functional recovery of tissue function in an animal model of diabetes (streptozotocin-induced pancreatic damage) (Stevenson et al, 2011; McGuinness et al, 2016). In this model, intravenous delivery of both rat and human pancreas-derived pathfinder cells leads to completely normal levels of blood glucose (normoglycemia) and the complete recovery of functional Islets of Langerhans with a mouse-specific cellular organisation. The cells are also effective and improve renal functions in an established model for acute kidney injury (ischemia-reperfusion injury) (McGlynn et al, 2013).
