This general term is used frequently to denote any inhibitor that blocks the activity of multiple caspases. Frequently, the ability of such an inhibitor to block cell death by apoptosis is taken as evidence for the involvement of caspases in this process, whereas the inability of an inhibitor to block apoptosis is taken as evidence that caspases are not involved. Chauvier et al (2007) have pointed out that pan-caspase inhibitors often do not inhibit all caspases equally well, do not share similar efficiency and specificity profiles against caspases
