Lambert and Smith (2008) have shown that the pagN protein of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium displays similarity to invasins and adhesins of Escherichia coli. pagN is located in the outer membrane and mediates agglutination of red blood cells, which can be masked by LPS. PagN protein supports adhesion to and invasion of mammalian cells in a manner that is dependent on cytoskeletal rearrangements. pagN mutants show reduced adhesion to and invasion of epithelial cells. Thus, the protein may contribute to the virulence of Salmonella typhimurium by functinoning as an adhesin and an invasin.
