The term pacemaker neurons is an operational definition for specialised neurons that show endogenous rhythmic bursts of activity, i.e., they fire in the absence of synaptic inputs (see also: clock neurons). Such pacemakers often form synchronously firing pacemaker ensembles due to electrical coupling to other network neurons. Non-oscillatory neurons in these networks can alter pacemaker ensemble periods. Pacemaker neurons or ensembles often also receive feedback from so-called network follower neurons, whose rhythmic activity is elicited by the pacemaker and that generally fire out of phase with it.
