This factor, described originally as NPF [Neurite-promoting factor] (Bianchi and Cohan, 1991), has been shown to promote the initial outgrowth and survival of statoacoustic ganglion neurons during embryonic development in chicken, mouse and rat (Bianchi and Cohan, 1991, 1993; Bianchi et al, 1998). The neurotrophic factor responsible for this activity was shown previously to be different from neurotrophic factors such as NGF, BDNF, NT-3, NT-4 and CNTF (Bianchi and Cohan, 1993).
