[op/op mice, op/op]
The recessive op (osteopetrotic) mutation arose spontaneously in the C57BL/6J-dw stock of mice. The mutation maps to chromosome 3. It is a nonsense mutation in codon 277 of the gene encoding M-CSF. For the rat locus see also: toothless.
Animals with this mutation are toothless. They also show skeletal abnormalities, possess a lower body weight and display impaired fertility. The animals are also characterized by an almost complete absence of osteoclasts and have a severe deficiency of mononuclear phagocytes. Elevated concentrations of the colony stimulating factor GM-CSF are found in the serum.
