This cell type constitutes a population of small agranular killer cells in teleosts that are thought to be the teleost equivalent of mammalian NK-cells and IL2-activated NK-cells (LAK cells) (Evans et al, 1998; Evans and Jaso-Friedmann, 1992). Yoder (2004) has pointed out, however, that the development of multiple cytotoxic catfish cell lines that are morphologically and functionally similar to human NK-cells and are distinct from nonspecific cytotoxic cells suggests that nonspecific cytotoxic cells do not represent the NK-cell lineage.
