[non-autonomous cell death] abbr. often: NCAD. A general term pertaining to one of several mechanisms where one cell causes cell death in a nearby cell (see also: communal cell death). Essentially, this is a paracrine mechanism where the behaviour of one cell influences another cell and where the presence and/or activity of the cell causing bystander cell death is obligatory. Examples of non-cell-autonomous death are fratricide, paracrine lysis, phagoptosis, entosis, apoptosis-induced apoptosis, cellular cannibalism.
