also: neuroimmune regulatory proteins; abbr. NIREGs. This general term refers to a collection of functionally related but structurally diverse mediators, often expressed constitutively by neurons but expressed also by glial cells, endothelial cells, ependymal cells and other cell types. These mediators protect neurons and other cell types from activities of inflammatory cells (infiltrating lymphocytes and activated microglial cells) and thus reduce the level of tissue inflammation and contribute to brain tissue repair
