This type of inhibitory interneurons, originally described as arachniform cells (Ramón y Cajal, 1904, 1922, 1995) but also referred to as dwarf cells (dwarf neurons) and spiderweb cells by him, is found widely in different brain locations. The name derives from the observation that these cells might be confused with astrocytes with short processes were it not for the absence of lateral outgrowths on the dendrites and the presence of an axon.
