abbr. NEP (a term with multiple meanings). Murine NEP encodes a receptor-like protein tyrosine kinase. The kinase region of NEP protein shows 50 % amino acid sequence identity to the neurotrophin receptors. The extracellular domain of NEP is unrelated to any known proteins. The NEP gene is expressed strongly within proliferating neuroepithelial cells of mouse embryos. The NEP gene is expressed also in embryonic sensory ganglion cells, striated muscle cells and epidermis, as well as in several adult tissues, including the ventricle linings and subpopulations of glial cells in the brain (Zerlin et al, 1993).
