[neurodegeneration-associated molecular pattern]
abbr. NAMPs. This general term has been introduced to refer to any kind of molecules (see also: molecular patterns) that is sensed by various types of receptors expressed on microglial cells and promotes their conversion into a special type of microglial cells known as DAMs [disease-associated microglia]. The expression of these receptors allows these cells to act as sensors of neurodegeneration commonly present in various CNS conditions (Deczkowska et al, 2018). As such, neurodegeneration-associated molecular patterns would include danger molecules present on apoptotic bodies of dying neural cells
