This cysteine-rich antimicrobial peptide of 101 amino acids has been identified in the marine mussel Mytilus coruscus. The cDNA has been cloned from hemocytes (Liao et al, 2013). The peptide is stored in circulating hemocytes and its expression is upregulated following bacterial challenge. Myticusin-1 shows stronger antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria than Gram-negative bacteria and fungi. It causes significant morphological alterations in both Sarcina luteus and Escherichia coli.
