[muscle pioneer cell]
This cell type, originally identified in grasshopper embryos (Ho et al, 1983) and subsequently identified in other insects (for example in Drosophila melanogaster, where they are being referred to as muscle founder cells; for a discussion see also: Powell and Wright, 2012), and in zebrafish (Devoto et al, 1996), constitute a small population of large mesodermal cells that arise early in development when the embryonic environment is relatively simple and distances short. These cells develop from adaxial cells. By their growth and association with particular sites along the ectoderm, muscle pioneer cells appear to erect a scaffold for later developing muscles and motoneuron
