also: mucous cells or muco-secretory cells; also: surface mucous cells; also: mucocytes. This is a general term pertaining to any cell type that secretes viscous mucus and/or mucins (mucus glycoproteins). Mucus secreted by these cells is important for their barrier functions and secretion is altered in various disease states (Lichtenberger, 1995; Thornton and Sheehan, 2004; Lillehoj and Kim, 2002; Jackson, 2001; Bansil et al, 1995).
Examples of such cells are surface mucus cells in the gastric and airway epithelium (gastric foveolar mucous cells or simply foveolar cells) and mucus-secreting goblet cells
