These cells are one of two specialized glumatagergic principal cells of the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. They are often referred to as hilar mossy cells, the hilus being the region of the dentate gyrus referred to previously as area H5, CA4, or the polymorphic zone. The term "mossy" refers to their complex spines or thorny excrescences, the appearance of which resembles a cell covered in moss (Amaral, 1978). This cell type has been described in numerous mammalian species (rats, mice, guinea pig, gerbil, hamster, and primates (for overview see: Scharfman and Myers, 2013).
