abbr. MDM. The gene encoding this protein has been cloned by Hoeck et al (1996) from the mollusc Lymnaea stagnalis, which is the intermediate host of the avian schistosome parasite Trichobilharzia ocellata. The protein shares a domain organization and high amino acid sequence identity with hemolin.
Expression of the MDM gene is downregulated gradually during the course of parasitosis. The authors have suggest that MDM is involved in the proper function of the Lymnaea internal defence system, and that downregulation of MDM expression may be part of the parasite's strategy to excape recognition by its host.
