[metachromatic cell]
This is a term used by histologists. It does not refer to a specific cell type but rather to the staining behaviour of certain stains that will stain various tissues and cell components in a colour that is different from that of the staining solution (Kramer and Windrum, 1955). This differential staining behaviour is due usually to a close stacking of the dye molecules, which causes a shift in colour. Depending on the dye used, this stacking is due to the presence of numerous closely packed chemical groups reacting with the dye.
In many publications the metachromatic cells referred to are mast cells and basophils.
