collective term for flattened epithelial cells of mesenchymal origin that form as monolayer lining the pleural, pericardial, and peritoneal cavities of the body (Michailova and Usunoff, 2006). Mesothelial cells secrete glycosaminoglycans and surfactant to allow the parietal and visceral serosa to slide over each other. The term M cells is used occasionally to describe mesentery-derived mesothelial cells.
The mesothelium is a dynamic cellular membrane with many important functions such as transport and movement of fluid and particulate matter, leucokyte migration in response to inflammatory mediators, synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines, growth factors and extracellular matrix
