These cells (called also melanotrophic cells, melanotropin cells, or melanotrophs) are found in the intermediate lobe of the pituitary. They are a type of neurosecretory cells that produce Melanocyte-stimulating hormone, a cleavage product of POMC (proopiomelanocortin). Thus, they are being referred to also as MSH cells. alpha MSH and beta-Endorphin are the major end products of POMC cleavage in melanotropic cells.
