(p97 melanoma antigen; abbr. MAP97) This cell surface glycoprotein is a member of the transferrin protein family and binds iron ions in a way similar to transferrin. The antigen is present in most human melanomas but only in trace amounts in normal adult tissues. Rose et al (1986) have suggested that this antigen expressed by melanoma cells be renamed melanotransferrin. In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD228.
