the term maturation factor is a general term for any activty promoting the maturation (differentiation) of cell types to their terminally differentiated forms.
A specific maturation factor has been described under this name by Xu et al (1996). This factor of 54.3 kDa is produced by T-cells. It acts as maturation inducer capable of mediating the differentiation of human myeloid leukemic HL-60 cells to terminal monocytic cells. The factor is identical with neuroleukin, which in turn has been shown to be identical with PGI. The maturation inducer also has activity of phosphoglucose isomerase
