this term is used sometimes to refer to modes of cell death that are, unlike cell death by apoptosis, associated with inflammasome activation and the activation and release of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL1-beta and IL18 and the release of cellular components that can function in the initiation of cellular immune responses (for comparison see also: immunogenic cell death). Lytic cell death may be caused by injury or bacterial or viral infection. The term may be used in connection with cell death by necrosis, necroptosis, pyroptosis.
