lysyl-tRNA synthetase
abbr. and approved gene symbol: KARS. abbr. also: KRS, lysRS. The enzyme (EC6.1.1.6 in the enzyme nomenclature catalogue) is known also as lysine-tRNA ligase. The human gene has been cloned by Tolkunova et al (2000) who have identified 2 full-length sequences for the enzyme (KARS1, KARS2), representing cytoplasmic and mitochondrial isoforms. The mitochondrial enzyme has a different 49-amino acid N terminus containing a mitochondrial targeting sequence. The gene encoding the synthetase has been cloned independently as KIAA0070.
