Lycosin-I is a peptide toxin of 24 amino acids [RKGWFKAMKSIAKFIAKEKLKEHL] isolated from the venom of the spider Lycosa singoriensis. The peptide shows a linear amphipathic alpha-helical conformation, common to alpha-helical host defense peptides.
Lycosin-I is an anticancer peptide that strongly inhibits cancer cell growth in vitro and can effectively suppress tumor growth in vivo. It activates the mitochondrial cell death pathway and sensitizes cancer cells for apoptosis and also up-regulates p27 to inhibit cell proliferation (Liu et al, 2012).
