These cells are cells in the corpus luteum that produce progesterone (Niswender et al, 2000). These cells also express relaxin (Taylor et al, 1992; Stoelk et al, 1991), relaxin receptors (Min et al, 1998), relaxin-like factor (Balvers et al, 1998; Tashima et al, 1995)
Usually, two cell types are distinguished. Large luteal cells are derived from granulosa cells. Small luteal cells derive from Theca cells (Niswender et al, 2000).
