These cells are hepatic natural killer cells that are located in the liver sinusoids where they adhere to endothelial cells (Bouwens et al, 1987; Bouwens and Wisse, 1992; Nakatani et al, 2000; Wisse et al, 1996). These liver-specific NK-cells possess a higher level of natural cytotoxicity and a different morphology when compared to blood NK-cells.
