this cell type located in the inner part of the pancreatic islet constitutes a population of stellate cells growing outward of isolated islets during the culture of islets from Wistar and Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats and human islets (Zha et al, 2014, 2016; Li F et al, 2016). They are similar, but not identical to classical pancreatic stellate cells. Li et al (2016) have observed similar expression patterns of islet stellate cells and pancreatic stellate cells but identified 1067 differentially expressed genes.
