[infection response gene 1] This Caenorhabditis elegans gene is an early response gene is thought to play a role in innate immunity. Its expression is induced strongly by wild-type Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain PA14, but not by other Caenorhabditis elegans pathogens or by other wild-type Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains that are weakly pathogenic to Caenorhabditis elegans (Estes et al, 2010). irg-1 expression is upregulated following disruption of several core host processes by pathogen infection, including inhibition of mRNA translation (Dunbar et al, 2012).
