These cells produce the extracellular matrix components of the invertebrate disc (Sive et al, 2002; Sztrolovics et al, 2002; Chen et al, 2004), and growth factors such as bone morphogenetic proteins (Yoon et al, 2004). The nucleus pulposus in the middle of the disc is a hydrated tissue rich in aggrecan that permits the intervertebral disc to resist compressive loads and to distribute hydraulic pressure in all directions within each disc (Setton and Chen, 2004).
