interstitial white matter neurons

This term pertains to a population of neurons that is observed in white matter of postnatal and adult brains (Okhotin VE and Kalinichenko SG, 2003; Suárez-Solá ML et al, 2009) and represents remnants of the early generated subplate neuron population (Kostović I and Jovanov-Milosević N, 2008) and therefore are the oldest neurons of the cerebral cortex. These cells are being referred to also as interstitial neurons, white matter interstitial neurons, interstitial cells of the white matter.
