These cells, also being referred to as Cajal cells, constitute a distinct type of mesenchymal cells (Lecoin et al, 1996; Young et al, 1996) located in the interstitium of the smooth muscle layers of the digestive tract (Rumessen and Vanderwinden, 2003; Takaki, 2003; Hirst and Edwards, 2004; Faussone-Pellegrini, 2005; Sanders et al, 2006). As suggested initially by Thuneberg (1982, these cell perform a pacemaker function by generating and actively propagating electrical slow waves of depolarization of the smooth musculature. Thus, they are instrumental for gastrointestinal autonomic rhythmicity. Some of these cells are intercalated between nerves and smooth muscle cells
