[interstitial cell]
This is a collective term for cells that are essentially stromal cells in the sense that they are part of the supportive framework of a tissue or organ (as distinguished from parenchymal cells, main functional cells that constitute the bulk of an organ or tissue. Note that the medical term interstitial simply refers to the interposition of such cells between other structures or cell types. The designation interstitial cell therefore, quite frequently is based on the location of structures or cell types under study with reference to those identified and/or characterized earlier.
