[integrin-mediated apoptosis] This term has been coined by Stupack et al (2001) who pointed out that integrins, a family of heterodimeric receptors for extracellular matrix proteins, members of which mediate cell anchorage and migration, may act as dependence receptors which, in the absence of ligands, can also initiate cell death. This form of death is different from anoikis, is stress response-independent, and does not rely on death receptor signaling, but depends on caspase-8 (see also: Stupack, 2005). Integrin-alpha-V / integrin-beta-3, for example, functions as a biosensor and promotes angiogenesis
