abbr. IAG. This hormone has been identified in various crustaceans (Manor et al, 2007; Ventura et al, 2009, 2015; Li et al, 2015; Lawrence et al, 2017; Rosen et al, 2010; Huang et al, 2014). Structurally, the sequences resemble genes of the insulin-like superfamily. The hormone is produced by the androgenic gland and controls male sex differentiation, growth and behaviour. Rosen et al (2010) have reported that silencing of in the red-claw crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus causes hypertrophy of androgenic gland cells, induces dramatic sex-related alterations, including male feature feminization, a reduction in sperm production, extensive testicular degeneration, expression of the vitellogenin gene, and accumulation of yolk proteins in the developing oocytes.
