This term refers to an active state of suppression of inflammation and immune responsiveness observed in the context of clearance of cells undergoing cell death by apoptosis (Birge and Ucker, 2008; Devitt and Marshall, 2011). This process is independent of phagocytosis and comprises a repertoire of signaling and effector responses in immune cells such as the repression of inflammatory cytokine gene expression in professional and non-professional phagocytes, and the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines (such as TGF-beta, IL10).
