This poorly characterized cell type is said to be responsible for heterotopic ossification in response to suitable signals, i.e., the formation of normal bone at ectopic soft tissue locations (muscle and other locations) (Kaplan et al, 2004). These cells are presumed to be different from determined osteoprogenitor cells (see also: osteoblasts) that are present in the bone marrow stroma and produce bone spontaneously.
